When to Replace vs Repair Your Toilet: A Homeowner's Guide

Most toilet problems can be repaired for a fraction of the cost of a replacement — but there are situations where investing in a new toilet suite makes more sense. Here's how to think through the decision.

Repair: When It Makes Sense

If the toilet body itself is in good condition and the problem is a faulty component — a worn flapper, failed inlet valve, broken flush button or handle, or a leaking seal — repair is almost always the right choice. These parts are inexpensive and a plumber can replace most of them in under an hour. Even replacing the entire cistern mechanism is usually cheaper than a full toilet replacement.

Replace: Signs It's Time for a New Toilet

There are several situations where replacement makes more sense than repair. First, if the porcelain itself is cracked — even a hairline crack can worsen over time and eventually cause a catastrophic failure. Second, if the toilet is very old (pre-1990s) and uses an older single-flush mechanism that consumes 12–15 litres per flush; a modern dual-flush toilet uses 3–4.5 litres, which can save tens of thousands of litres of water annually. Third, if you've had to repair the same toilet multiple times in a short period — at some point, the cumulative repair cost exceeds the cost of a new unit.

The Age Factor

A well-maintained toilet can last decades — the porcelain itself has an almost unlimited lifespan. But the internal mechanisms have a shorter life. If your toilet is over 20 years old and experiencing its first major fault, a repair is probably fine. If it's the third repair in as many years, replacement is likely the better long-term investment.

What to Expect From a Toilet Replacement

A toilet replacement by a licensed plumber typically takes 1–2 hours and includes removal and disposal of the old toilet, installation of the new suite, connection to existing water supply and waste pipes, and a full test. We can supply a toilet suite or install one you've purchased yourself. Modern toilet suites start from around $200 for a basic model and go up from there depending on features and style.
