Why Does My Toilet Keep Blocking?

An occasional toilet blockage is one thing — everyone has experienced one at some point. But if your toilet keeps blocking regularly, there's almost certainly an underlying cause that needs to be properly addressed rather than just plunged and forgotten.

The Most Common Cause: Flushing the Wrong Things

Toilets are designed to handle human waste and toilet paper. Nothing else. Wet wipes — even those marketed as 'flushable' — do not break down in the sewer system and are one of the leading causes of recurring toilet and sewer blockages. Cotton pads, paper towels, sanitary products, dental floss, and even excess toilet paper can all cause or contribute to blockages. The fix here is simple: put a bin in the bathroom and use it.

Low-Flow Toilets and Partial Blockages

Older low-flow toilets sometimes lack the flush power to clear waste from the pipe fully. This can leave partial blockages that build up over time. If your toilet consistently struggles to flush cleanly, it may be undersized for your household's usage, or the flush mechanism may need adjustment or replacement. Upgrading to a modern dual-flush toilet can resolve this problem permanently.

A Blocked Drain or Sewer Line

If the toilet blocks frequently despite careful use, the problem is likely not in the toilet itself but further down the drain line. A partial sewer blockage — often caused by tree root intrusion, grease build-up, or a damaged pipe — restricts flow and causes repeated toilet backups. This is particularly common in older homes in the Blue Mountains. A CCTV drain inspection is the only reliable way to identify and fix this type of problem.

Venting Problems

Drain pipes need air to flow correctly — the same way a straw works better when air can enter from the top. Blocked drain vents (often caused by debris or bird nests in roof vent stacks) can cause slow draining and gurgling in toilets. This is a less common cause but worth investigating if other causes have been ruled out.

When to Call a Plumber

If your toilet has blocked more than twice in the past year with no obvious cause, call a plumber. A recurring blockage that isn't explained by what's being flushed almost always indicates a problem in the drain line. The sooner it's investigated, the less damage it's likely to cause — and the cheaper it is to fix.
