How to Find a Hidden Water Leak in Your Home

Hidden water leaks can cause thousands of dollars in damage before they're discovered. A small leak inside a wall or under a slab can go unnoticed for months, quietly causing structural damage, mould, and inflated water bills. Here's how to spot one — and what to do about it.

Check Your Water Meter

The easiest way to check for a hidden leak is to use your water meter. Turn off every tap and water-using appliance in the house. Note the reading on your water meter, then wait 30 minutes without using any water. If the reading has changed, water is flowing somewhere it shouldn't be. This confirms a leak but won't tell you where it is.

Look for Unexplained Increases in Your Water Bill

A sudden or gradual increase in your water bill with no change in usage habits is a classic sign of a hidden leak. Compare your bills over the last 12 months. Even a small continuous leak — a dripping pipe inside a wall, for example — can add hundreds of litres to your daily usage and significantly inflate your quarterly bill.

Watch for Damp Patches, Staining, or Bubbling Paint

Water stains on walls or ceilings, patches of damp plaster, peeling or bubbling paint, or a musty smell in an area with no obvious source can all indicate a leak inside the wall or ceiling cavity. Don't ignore these signs — by the time you can see water damage, the leak has often been present for some time and the damage may be more extensive than it appears.

Check for Soft or Warped Flooring

Soft spots in timber floorboards, warped or lifting tiles, or a floor that feels springy underfoot can indicate water leaking under the floor — either from a pipe leak or from a slab leak. This type of damage is particularly common in older homes in the Blue Mountains where pipe materials may be aging.

When to Call a Leak Detection Specialist

If your meter test confirms a leak but you can't find it visually, it's time to call a licensed leak detection plumber. Modern leak detection uses a combination of acoustic listening equipment, thermal imaging, and pressure testing to accurately locate leaks without unnecessary damage to walls or floors. This saves significant time and cost compared to opening up walls on guesswork.
